Analysis
In a December 2007 satirical piece posted on the l.A.Times opinion section(http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/editorials/la-ed-santas24dec24,0,6003216.story?coll=la-news-comment-editorials), an unknown author addresses that Santa Claus's, the symbol of Christmas, physical appearance conveys a bad message to the general publics health. Santa is a "...apple-shaped advertisement for type two diabetes and heart disease." The anonymous author describes how Britain believes that "jolly old St. Nick" is responsible for obesity and that new fitness programs and more slim Santa's are being imputed into malls, when Britain is just following the U.S.'s high obesity percentile. "...by 2050 more than half of Britain's population will be obese...".Another argument for the change of Santa's appearance is that it doesn't follow a more historical look of the original Clause who lived in Turkey. So instead of a fat man, due to the consumption of billions of cookies, coming down a chimney, some argue that Santa should promote a more healthy lifestyle with a more lean look. The article's humorous approach pokes fun at Britain's solution of slimming Santa to reduce obesity.
Tone: humorous/satirical
Do you think Britain used Santa as an escape goat for their obesity conundrums?
If Santa's image impacted people enough to consume more food then wouldn't a slim Santa send messages of anorexia because of the rapid weight loss?

Are these people insane!!! I love Santa as much as the next kid but I wouldn't try to gain 200 pounds to be like him. In modern times everyone is blaming eating disoders and bad self-esteem issues on the media and pop culture. Santa has been around for decades and just recently within the last 20 years are so, America's weight as a whole as soared. It is not Santa that is making people fat,or olive oil(from popeye)that makes people anorexic. Humans have this annoying tendancy to blame their problems on others even if it is a defenseless cartoon character or fairytale for children. The whole theory of a skinny Santa promoting better health is ludacris.
p.s.- Everyone knows Santa Claus is real and this article probably hurt his feelings :( :P
This has got to be the most hilarious article i have heard of, even read, cause i had to see it to believe it! I can see how Brittain can use the Santa Excuse for their obesity problem, but then again, i dont think anyone is stupid enough to try to get that fat to be like an imaginary figure. I mean, Im fat!, but thats just cause i love food, and i love to eat, but im not trying to be like him at all.
I agree that if santa does slim down then that is a sign of anorexia, because seriously, who will lose that mch weight that fast!? not even with slim fast people!
p.s.-Everyone knows that Santa Clause id fake, this article should have opened peoples eyes by now!
SANTA! he brought me gifts this year lol. i dont think a leaner santa would send a message like anorexia. if they want a skinnier santa, just get a regular guy, not a dude who's skin-and-bones.....HAHA imagina a buff santa like younger arnold! HAHAHA!
i honestly dont care what santa looks like, and if people are stupid enough to be influenced by how he looks, then thats pretty dumb. question: why is it that santa is getting more publicity (about how he looks) all of a sudden? it doesnt make sense. i, for one, dont think its a big deal, but i can see why they're doing what they're doing.
Mrs. Petrelli :P
first of all you'd have to be a crazy person to say "i wanna be obese like santa!!" unless santa put a gun to your head and told you to eat the big mac then i dont see how he should be blamed.
i have to agree w/ my sis(canada roxx). these people are trying to change the whole persona of santa. for decades, Santa has been known as this jolly, pleasantly plump fellow who enjoys cookies. how can you change that now? after all these years. Santa Clause does not make people obese, people make themselves that way by not eating healthy and excercising.in my opinion this is a stupid idea and i hope the U.S. does not follow Britain in this.
